Learn about using mobile audio-visual (AV) recording devices in sensitive settings (such as a hospital intensive care unit or other patient-facing environment). The webinar describes ethical and regulatory issues associated with AV-based research, including how data collection and the technology used affects privacy and confidentiality, the informed consent process, legal/liability risks, and the issue of bystanders.
Additionally, the presenters discuss implementation considerations such as organizational readiness and participatory design strategies. The webinar concludes with real-world examples of technological and practical challenges, and both planned and mid-study adaptations to such challenges.

Meet the Presenter
Ethan Larsen, PhD – Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia
Ethan Larsen is a Human Factors Engineer at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in the Radiology department. His current research focuses on the intersection of human factors with patient safety and health informatics. In addition to research, he also serves as a member of the quality and safety team for radiology.
Jacob Kolman, MA – Houston Methodist and Texas A&M University
Jacob Kolman is a scientific writer at the Center for Outcomes Research, Houston Methodist, and at Texas A&M University. Mr. Kolman obtained an MA in Philosophy (Rice University) and BA in English and Philosophy (Austin College). His research interests include research ethics and epistemology, medical professionalism, and publication ethics.
Faisal Masud, MD, FCCP, FCCM – Houston Methodist and Weill Cornell Medical College
Faisal Masud MD, FCCP, FCCM is medical director of critical care (Houston Methodist), vice chair for quality and patient safety, and medical director of the cardiovascular ICU at Houston Methodist DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center. He is a professor of anesthesiology (Weill Cornell Medicine) and of anesthesiology (Houston Methodist).
Farzan Sasangohar, PhD – Texas A&M University and Houston Methodist
Farzan Sasangohar is an Assistant Professor in Industrial and Systems Engineering at Texas A&M University and an Assistant Professor in the Center for Outcomes Research (Primary) and Department of Surgery (Secondary) at Houston Methodist Hospital. He received his PhD in Industrial Engineering from the University of Toronto in 2015.
