About this Course

Through an engaging video presentation, learners explore critical topics necessary for successful participation in science fairs. The course begins with an overview of research integrity, where learners explore approaches for the appropriate crediting of work and how to collect and manage data, while also understanding elements of research misconduct. The course then presents the International Science and Engineering Fair rules, responsibilities of researchers, and an overview of the scientific method. Moving on from the rules, learners then review the forms often required for science fairs. Select topics important in research are also covered as part of this course, including environmental stewardship, animal care, human subjects research, and potentially hazardous biological agents.

Science Fair 101

This module identifies the rules and considerations to ensure a safe research environment, with particular attention to researcher requirements and responsibilities related to science fairs. The module also provides an overview of the approval and documentation process as well as the scientific method.

Recommended Use: Required

Author(s): Heather Domjan, EdD - University of Houston; Wilford Miranda, MS - Scheck Hillel Community School

Science Fair Forms

Identifying and understanding the different forms required by the International Science and Engineering Fair for scientific research are key to success in science fairs. This module guides learners through the different forms, explains the importance of each form, and describes each form’s relationship to scientific research projects. The module concludes with strategies to assist students in identifying which form to use when starting scientific research.

Environmental Stewardship

This module introduces learners to environmental stewardship with a review of sustainability's “3E's” (environment, economy, and equity). It explains how environmental stewardship can positively impact natural carbon sinks and help eliminate the main emission sources. It concludes with actions students can take to make their science fair projects more environmentally sustainable.

Human Subjects Research

This module provides an overview of human subjects research in the United States. It begins with the historical cases of unethical research involving humans that led to regulations and procedures that protect human subjects. It then reviews the fundamental ethical principles of human subjects research and the corresponding regulations. The module concludes by discussing a researcher’s essential responsibilities when working with human subjects.

Potentially Hazardous Biological Agents

This last module presents learners with a review of projects that require the preapproval of a scientific review committee and the rules and procedures related to working with potentially hazardous biological agents. The module defines and provides examples of the four biosafety level risk groups. It concludes with a review of where projects may occur and who must supervise the projects depending on the nature of the project.
