About this Course

This course prepares individuals across disciplines to engage with the scholarly publication process in an intentional and informed way. It explains the core elements of scholarly publication and how to navigate the publication and writing processes in ways that reflect a current understanding of issues that arise for researchers and writers across disciplines. As such, the course acts as a preparation to writing and publishing, helping writers build awareness of how to make the process personally meaningful, engaging, and impactful.

History and Purpose of Scholarly Writing and Publishing

This module explores and provides a deeper understanding of the history of scholarly publication, combined with a self-awareness of how you will enter the process. The module provides the key historical influences on contemporary issues in publishing. It also identifies how shifts in publishing trends and processes are changing over time.

Ethics and Authorship in Scholarly Publishing

In this module, learners will explore some of the issues of ethics and authorship that arise in scholarly publishing cultures and practices. Publishing has high stakes for writers, disciplines, institutions, and communities. It also raises ethical questions around attribution, knowledge production, and intellectual property rights. Recognizing how and why ethical issues arise during the scholarly publication process can help you navigate them responsibly, respectfully, and with a view toward maintaining authority over your own writing while honoring the contributions of others.

Publishing Community Members and Their Roles in the Publication Process

This module covers the communities that form the infrastructure for the scholarly publishing enterprise and how to position your work with them effectively so that you can successfully publish your scholarship. The module explains the different roles that individuals involved in publication play and explores the publishing process from the perspective of the editors. It also helps you identify considerations for negotiating competing goals and interests in the publication pipeline.

Through this course, learners can prepare for academic and scholarly publication and gain necessary knowledge of the process.

How long will the course take a learner to complete?

This course consists of seven required modules. Each module contains detailed content and a quiz, as well as exercises, images, and other supplemental materials.

Modules vary in length, and learners may require different amounts of time to complete them based on their familiarity and knowledge of the topic. However, modules are each designed to take about 20-25 minutes to complete.

Is this course eligible for continuing education credits?

This course does not currently have CE/CME credits available
