Daniel Smith:

Hi, I’m Daniel Smith, Associate Director of Content and Education at the CITI Program, and I am here today to introduce you to On Tech Ethics with CITI Program.

For more than 20 years now, CITI Program has been at the forefront of providing educational content that enhances the integrity and professionalism of individuals involved in research, healthcare, technology, and higher education. If you are not already familiar, CITI Program’s content covers the protection of human participants and research, the responsible conduct of research, the humane care and use of animals, environmental health and safety, the responsible use of technologies, and more. In my role at CITI Program, I have the unique pleasure of working with various subject matter experts to develop that content, and in doing so, I’m continually exposed to different perspectives, emerging topics and trends, and the evolution of ethical research and development in general.

And right at the forefront of those emerging topics, trends and issues to address is technology. So that brings me to the concept for this podcast series. Through conversations with different experts, I want to expose you to a broad range of technology ethics topics. Together, we are going to learn about different technologies and their associated ethical issues and other important considerations for people involved in the design, development, oversight, and use of technology in different contexts. My hope is that you’ll leave each conversation feeling better equipped to responsibly navigate your work involving technology.

Now, to give you a sense of what these conversations are going to cover, I would like to quickly highlight a few episodes. I’m going to talk to Tommy Goetto, who manages research compliance at the Division of Research at Kaiser Permanente. In that episode, we are going to discuss the challenges that institutional review board members face when reviewing research protocols that involve artificial intelligence, strategies for addressing those challenges, current events and trends that may impact human subjects research involving AI, and additional resources that you can utilize if you are involved in this space.

I’m also going to talk to Josephine Johnston, who’s the director of research and a research scholar at the Hastings Center and a lecturer at the University of Otago’s Bioethics Centre. In that episode, we are going to discuss chimeric research, why it is important to scientific progress, and its core ethical and governance issues. We will then go over Josephine’s latest research that seeks to clarify the ethical and policy issues raised by chimeric research and some recommendations that resulted from that research.

And in another episode, I’m going to talk to Eric Wagner, who is the Director of Legal Affairs for Duke University’s Office of Licensing and Ventures. In that episode, we are going to discuss some common technology transfer issues that university faculty and staff should be mindful of when developing technology that may be commercialized. We will also go over some ways faculty and staff can navigate these challenges, current events and trends they should be paying attention to, and additional resources they can utilize to navigate the commercialization of technology.

As you can see, the topics covered in this podcast are going to be broad, and like I said, I hope that you’ll leave each conversation feeling better equipped to responsibly navigate your work involving technology, or at the very least, I hope that you learn something new from them. If you have an idea for a topic that you want to be discussed on this podcast, I want to hear from you In the show notes, I’ve included a link to a form where you can share your ideas and nominate guests including yourself.

Okay, so that is it for now. I look forward to bringing you these conversations and helping you learn about ethical issues and other considerations raised by technology.
